Tranquility

Description

This is a Chilean flamingo walking around the Uyuni Salt Flats, deliberately and delicately. Whenever I look at this photograph I am filled with a sense of tranquillity. The movement and the reflection left me transfixed with a deep respect for these beautiful creatures who live in some pretty inhospitable conditions and still manage to go about their daily lives with so much grace.

The Uyuni Salt Flats or Salar de Uyuni is a dried-up prehistoric lake, which has been transformed into a white salty desert over millennia. At over 3600m above sea level, it's not the easiest place to live, but it continues to provide a much-needed rest stop for flamingos as they migrate. When the salt pan floods, it transforms into the world's largest mirror, blurring the distinction between land and sky and providing some breathtaking reflections
