Mirror Images

Description

Sometimes you head out into the bush and come back with an image you didn't even know you wanted. I went out on this day with the hope of capturing some intimate interactions between an elephant mother and her calf at a waterhole.

Focusing on just one pair of elephants in a large herd playing and jostling with one another can be quite challenging. You often feel like there are other moments which you are inevitably missing. Plus, the heat and the dust of the mid-day make it harder to concentrate. However, I wanted to focus on this mother and daughter duo.

As I started photographing some beautiful, tender moments between them, they suddenly split up and started to go in different directions. I caught them looking like mirror images of each other. It was fleeting, but sometimes these happy accidents, lead to the most memorable images.
